Frequently asked questions

Is this live traffic information?

No. These are Department for Transport historical annual estimates, not current congestion or journey-time information.

What does AADF mean?

Annual Average Daily Flow is the estimated number of vehicles passing a count location in both directions on an average day of the year.

Why is the result not on my street?

DfT estimates every major-road link in Great Britain, but samples only some minor roads. We show the nearest available count point and its distance.

What do Counted and Estimated mean?

Counted figures are based on a traffic count for that location and year. Estimated figures are modelled or carried forward; their detailed method is shown on each result.

Does this cover Northern Ireland?

Not yet. The initial release covers Great Britain—England, Scotland and Wales—because Northern Ireland uses a separate official dataset.
